“When No One Wants the Job”

“When a man takes hold of his brother in the house of his father, saying, ‘you have clothing; you be our ruler, and let these ruins be under your power,’ in that day he will protest, saying, ‘I cannot cure your ills, for in my house is neither food nor clothing; do not make me a ruler of the people.’ “

Isaiah 3:6-7 (NKJV)

As we step into this new week, we’re turning to a sobering moment in Isaiah where leadership is scarce and responsibility is avoided. These verses remind us how deeply a community suffers when no one is willing to step forward—yet they also invite us to consider the quiet, everyday places where God calls us to lead with courage. Throughout this week, we’ll explore what it means to say yes when others say no and to carry influence with humility and faith.

When leadership becomes inconvenient, God calls His people to step forward with courage, not shrink back in fear.

Isaiah paints a sobering picture: society has crumbled so deeply that when leadership is desperately needed, people run from it. A man is begged, “You have clothing—you be our leader,” but he refuses, saying, “I cannot cure your ills,” In other words: “Do not make me a ruler of the people.”

This is what happens when a culture loses its moral center. Leadership becomes a burden instead of a calling. Responsibility becomes something to dodge instead of something to embrace. And fear replaces conviction.

But God’s people are not called to live that way.

Every one of us—whether we lead a home, a workplace, a ministry, or simply our own daily choices—faces moments when stepping up feels costly. It’s easier to stay quiet. It’s easier to let someone else take the heat. It’s easier to say, “Not me. Not now.”

Yet Scripture consistently shows God using ordinary people who simply said yes when others said no. Moses didn’t feel qualified. Gideon didn’t feel strong. Jeremiah didn’t feel ready. But God wasn’t looking for perfect leaders—He was looking for willing hearts.

Isaiah 3 reminds us that when people refuse responsibility, brokenness deepens. But when God’s people step forward with humility and courage, healing begins.

Today, ask yourself: Where is God nudging me to step up instead of step back? Where is He calling me to be a voice, an encourager, a stabilizer, a servant leader?

You don’t need a title. You don’t need the clothing. You just need a willing heart.

Closing Prayer:

Lord, give me the courage to step into the roles You’ve placed before me. When responsibility feels heavy, strengthen me. When fear whispers “not me,” remind me that You go with me. Make me a person who brings stability, hope, and integrity wherever I stand. In Jesus’ name, AMEN!
