“God is jealous, and the LORD avenges; the LORD avenges and is furious. The LORD will take vengeance on His adversaries, and He reserves wrath for His enemies.”
Nahum 1:2 (NKJV)
Nahum isn’t a book we quote often, but its opening lines carry a steadying truth we need in every season: God sees injustice, He responds with perfect wisdom, and He remains in complete control—even when life feels stormy. These three short devotionals walk us through Nahum 1:2–4, showing us a God who takes evil seriously, who is patient yet powerful, and who commands the very storms that unsettle us. Over the next three days, we’ll explore how these ancient words speak fresh courage into our workplaces, homes, and daily routines.
Wednesday
God’s justice is not a threat to His people—it’s a promise of protection.
Nahum opens with a thunderclap. The people of Judah had lived under the shadow of Assyria—bullies of the ancient world. Their cruelty was legendary. Their threats were constant. Their power seemed unstoppable. But God sends Nahum with a message that flips the script: God sees every injustice, and He will not let evil win.
We sometimes read words like jealous and avenging and feel uneasy. But in Scripture, God’s jealousy is not petty or insecure—it is protective. It means He refuses to share His people with anything that destroys them. His vengeance is not rage—it is righteous justice. It means He will not allow wickedness to have the last word.
For believers today, Nahum 1:2 is not a verse meant to frighten us. It is meant to steady us. When the world feels unfair, when evil seems loud, when wrongdoers appear to prosper, God whispers through Nahum: “I have not overlooked anything. I will make all things right.”
This is not a call for us to take revenge. It is a reminder that we don’t have to. God’s justice frees us from bitterness, frees us from carrying the weight of payback, and frees us to trust Him with what we cannot fix.
CLOSING PRAYER:
Lord, thank You that You see every injustice and You care deeply about what harms Your people. Help me trust Your timing, Your justice, and Your heart. Keep me from bitterness and teach me to rest in Your righteous character. In Jesus’ name, AMEN!
