”I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in Him will I trust.”
Psalm 91:2 (NKJV)
Psalm 91 opens not with a description of trouble, but with a declaration of trust. The psalmist doesn’t deny danger or pretend life is easy. Instead, they choose to say something powerful about God: “He is my refuge and my fortress.” This is a spoken decision of faith.
A refuge is a place you run to when you are exposed. A fortress is a place that cannot be easily shaken or broken into. By using both images, the psalmist reminds us that God is not only gentle shelter, but also strong defense. God covers us when we feel vulnerable and stands firm when the pressures of life attack.
Notice the phrase, “I will say of the Lord.” This trust is intentional. Faith is not only something we feel; it is something we declare. There are moments when fear is loud, circumstances are uncertain, and answers seem delayed. In those moments, choosing to speak trust in God can steady our hearts. What we say shapes what we believe.
The verse ends with a deeply personal statement: “My God; in Him will I trust.” This is not secondhand faith. It is not borrowed confidence. It is a personal relationship grounded in experience. The psalmist knows God well enough to rely on God completely.
Today, you may be facing stress, uncertainty, or decisions that feel overwhelming. Psalm 91:2 invites you to make a declaration of your own. Even if the situation hasn’t changed yet, you can choose where you place your trust. God remains a refuge you can run to and a fortress that will not fail.
Let this verse become more than words you read—let it become words you say. When fear rises, speak trust. When uncertainty comes, declare who God is to you. In doing so, you anchor your heart in the faithfulness of God.
Closing Prayer:
Lord God, You are our refuge and our fortress. When we feel exposed, afraid, or uncertain, help us to run to You instead of away from You. Teach us to speak trust even before we see answers. Strengthen our faith and remind us that You are our God, worthy of our complete trust. We place our lives in Your hands today. In Jesus’ name. AMEN!
