Remembering Our Salvation

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”

Ephesians 2:8-9 (NKJV)

After honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice for us on Memorial Day and reflecting on the sacrifices made for our earthly freedom, it is fitting to turn our hearts toward the greatest memorial of all—our salvation through Jesus Christ. Memorial Day reminds us of courage, sacrifice, and the cost of freedom. The gospel reminds us of a deeper truth: our spiritual freedom came at a cost we could never pay, secured by a Savior who gave His life willingly.

Ephesians 2:8–9 calls us to remember that salvation is not something we earn, achieve, or deserve. It is a gift—pure, undeserved grace. Just as we pause to remember the fallen so we never take our national freedom for granted, we must also pause to remember the cross so we never take our spiritual freedom lightly.

Remembering our salvation keeps us humble. It reminds us that we were rescued, not improved. Redeemed, not polished. Loved at our worst, not rewarded at our best. Christ didn’t wait for us to become worthy; He made us worthy through His sacrifice.

Remembering our salvation also keeps us grateful. When we recall where we were before grace found us—lost, broken, spiritually dead—we see the beauty of what God has done. Gratitude grows when memory is active. The more we remember, the more we worship.

And remembering our salvation keeps us anchored. In a world that shifts, disappoints, and wounds, the gift of salvation stands unshaken. We are saved by grace. We are kept by grace. We will be carried home by grace. Nothing can undo what Christ has done.

As we move beyond Memorial Day, let us carry forward a deeper remembrance—the remembrance of the cross, the empty tomb, and the grace that changed everything.

Closing Prayer:

Father, thank You for the gift of salvation through Your Son, Jesus Christ. Thank You that we are saved by grace and not by our own efforts. Help us remember the sacrifice Jesus made and live each day with gratitude, humility, and awe. May the memory of our salvation shape our choices, strengthen our faith, and deepen our love for You. In Jesus’ name, AMEN!
