Discovering What God Had Already Prepared

“If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there Your hand shall lead me, and Your right hand shall hold me.”

Psalm 139:9-10 (NKJV)

When we think of October 12, 1492, we picture Christopher Columbus stepping onto the shores of the New World. He believed he had reached the edges of Asia, but instead he arrived on an island in the Bahamas—Guanahani, renamed San Salvador. That moment changed the course of history, but it was only the beginning of his journey. Columbus would go on to make three more voyages, exploring the Caribbean, the northern coast of South America, and the shores of Central America.

What’s striking is that Columbus didn’t stop after the first discovery. He kept going. He kept exploring. He kept searching for what he believed was out there. His journeys were filled with storms, uncertainty, miscalculations, and hardship—but he pressed on. But, what happened to Christopher Columbus? On this date in 1499, Francisco De Bobadilla was appointed Governor of the Indies, succeeding Christopher Columbus

There’s something deeply spiritual about that.

Psalm 139 reminds us that no matter how far we travel—across oceans, into unknown seasons, or through uncharted chapters of life—God is already there. Columbus may have believed he was discovering new lands, but in truth, he was stepping into places God had long prepared.

And the same is true for us.

We often face moments where we feel like explorers: A new job. A new diagnosis. A new responsibility. A new season of life we didn’t ask for. A new challenge we didn’t expect.

We stand on the shoreline of the unknown and wonder what waits beyond the horizon. But while the future feels new to us, it is never new to God. He has already walked the path. He has already prepared the way. He has already placed His hand on the map of our lives.

Columbus’ voyages remind us that discovery is rarely a one-time event. It’s a journey. And faith works the same way. We don’t simply “discover” God once—we keep discovering Him. In new places. In new trials. In new blessings. In new depths of His grace.

Every time we step into something unfamiliar, God invites us to trust that His hand will guide us and His right hand will hold us fast. The unknown is not a place to fear—it is a place where God reveals more of Himself.

So today, whatever “new world” you’re stepping into, remember: you are not the first one there. God has gone before you, and He will meet you when you arrive.

Closing Prayer:

Father, thank You for going before us into every unknown place. When we face new challenges or unfamiliar seasons, remind us that Your hand is already guiding us and Your presence is already waiting for us. Give us courage to step forward in faith, trusting that You have prepared the way. Lead us, steady us, and help us discover more of You each day. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
